Ping!
Boy, today was tough.
A lot of work, a lot of follow ups and a lot of stupid men to pry information from.
At the end of it all was a tough story to write and with very little time (plus I was hungry cause it was dinner time).
So I wrote, fast as I could, with as much sense as I could, compiling the conversations I've had and editing them to make a news piece.
It took me 45 minutes before I felt it was good enough to send it in to the editors. Breathing a sigh of relief I moved my cursor to click 'Save' on our journo writing software, the screen blinked, and the login screen came on.
THE BLOODY SOFTWARE SOMEHOW HAD LOGGED ME OUT WITHOUT SAVING.
The worst possible thing to happen when meeting a deadline had happened.
I was going to cry, but I didn't because I didn't have time and had to rewrite the whole thing and the editors were waiting.
So I typed typed typed (on Microsoft Word this time), copied the text over and finally got the piece in.
Then I investigated.
Turns out that the software, which we had only gotten about two months earlier and started using recently (we're slowly phasing out the use of the old software), is Internet-based.
What happened was that the page had timed out.
That's right.
TIMED OUT.
Where got such a thing right. Why would you get an unreliable Internet-based software to replace a software that's working perfectly fine (except that it's so old that the company which produced it isn't around anymore, and it only works with 20 year old Apple PCs).
So from now on, we journos, who have to deal with enough shit as it is, have to type, write and edit our stories on MS Words and when we're done, then copy and paste it into the software to send it in.
Being in the newsroom is such a joy.

oh god that sucks. I'm no journalist but i want to slash my wrist every time an email doesn't get sent, even if it's just to say, hey want to do coffee? so yeah i can imagine. least you got it done in the end, although i'm sure at least 11 strands of grey hair must have sprouted in that span of 15 minutes?
YAaaaaaaaaaa. like how xanga servers would go bonkers occasionally and you'd type like this loooooong heartfelt post and when you wanna post, WHAM, it's all gone.
I hate technology.
I'm BALDING.
So that's why I am balding! And to think even my oh so reliable non-internet based software Microsoft Word corrupted my 3000 word assignment last night.
I did cry. You're the brave brave soldier, Kim. Salute.
OMG then how?!!!!
Shit man. I might've hurled my pc out if it was 3,000 words.
How can corrupted just like that?!!! Unless you copied here and there and the device got prob, it doesn't make sense!
How now?
i would've just cried and typed it all out again while drowning the keyboard in my tears. and the next thing you know, keyboard rosak -_-"
Yeah I'd have just blinked and probably sit there in disbelief in shock....for a moment then freak out like crazy, while YOU lady just kept your cool and retyped the whole thing and met the deadline.
Amazing.
Really amazing.
sl.. you'd be surprised how much liquid the keyboard can take. i once spilt coke all over it, dried it out in the sun, and it worked! except that when i typed, the letters all jumbled up.
lc.. DEADLINEEEEE. if you don't meet it, you're dead. so yea, i guess there are worst things than losing your work, though highly debatable whether just sitting there and crying wouldve been a better choice. my boss mightve felt kinder to me after that.
OH AND YOU KNOW WHAT THE SCREWED UP THING IS?
They didn't even use the story the next day.
OMGAWDDD NO USE THE STORY?!?!??!!
ARGGGH
Times like this, you wished you knew how to kick box right?? ;)
OOOOH BOY.. i KNOW what that's like and can you believe it? My company's official email account has TIME OUT after like 15 minutes? even while you're typing an entire essay just to get a contact to get one stupid point. so you like click "Send", and it's actually says "Bye, See you again soon" !?!?!?!?!?!? 0_o
and then you curse and swear at it. and if it were possible, pull it out from it's socket to throw it out from the fifth floor.
